How I will help your child develop their literacy skills?

My extensive experience as an Early Years Resource teacher has given me a large skillset to assist children who are struggling readers and writers. As an Orton-Gillingham Practitioner I have been trained to offer 1:1 tutoring sessions which will help your child develop their literacy skills (reading, writing and spelling).

Why use the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The Orton-Gillingham Approach differs from the three cueing system approach which is used in a significant portion of Manitoban public schools.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy to individuals who have difficulties reading, writing and spelling.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is:

Individualized

Individualized

Through on-going assessment and continuous monitoring, I design individualized lessons to target the changing needs of your child.

Sequential, Cumulative and Integrated

Sequential, Cumulative and Integrated

Through on-going assessment and continuous monitoring, I design individualized lessons to target the changing needs of your child.

Cognitive

Cognitive

The lessons provide your child with a platform to learn to think and reason rather than rely on rote memorization. With my support, your child is taught to work through and solve language problems rather than just guessing at words. Concepts and skills are taught for mastery.

Multisensory

Multisensory

All lessons are designed to use hearing, seeing and movement in order to create and develop your child’s neural pathways.

Emotionally Sound

Emotionally Sound

Through individualized lessons, repeated practice and frequent review of previously taught skills your child will have many opportunities to build their confidence.

Alphabetic/Phonetic and Language-Based

Alphabetic/Phonetic and Language-Based

Through lessons your child will learn letter sounds and then move onto how to read and write more complex words. The Orton-Gillingham Approach will teach your child about how the English language works (Anglo-Saxon, Latin and Greek influences, sentence structure, etc.)

How often will my child need tutoring?

It is crucial and I recommend that children, with literacy challenges, have lessons two times a week.
Children need regularly scheduled lessons in order for new concepts and skills to become mastered.
Frequency of lessons is important.

How much does 1:1 tutoring cost?

Each 50-minute lesson is $60
You must commit to an 8-lesson term: ($480)
Tutoring requires a significant time and financial commitment.

Testimonials

“My 8 year old son struggled with reading since Kindergarten. He was always behind the rest of his class, and he felt insecure and dumb. In Grade 2 he had a school resource teacher assigned to help him learn to read, but he didn’t make any progress.

At the beginning of Grade 3 we signed him up for private tutoring lessons twice a week with Janet. He immediately loved her and I could hear him laughing and joking around with her during every lesson. After 4 months of working with Janet, the school told me that my son no longer needed to work with the resource teacher because he had advanced 6 reading levels!!!

My son now happily reads every evening; he feels smart and competent and school is much easier for him. His grades have gone up in every subject, now that he can read.

We appreciate Janet so much!”

Janet has tutored our granddaughter since January 2025. I am very impressed with her unique way that she is teaching our granddaughter. She is very patient and knows when to assist/prompt or challenge her.  I feel like our granddaughter becomes more successful with each lesson, it has helped being tutored twice a week.  Janet has a significant experience and credentials that she uses to tailor to our granddaughters learning. It is very evident that Janet has formed a bond of trust and respect with our granddaughter.  It is a privilege to have Janet and see such great results, we are so grateful. Janet has made a significant impact on improving our granddaughter’s reading, writing and spelling. I have to admit I have learned some literacy tips too!

Janet has been teaching my daughter skills and techniques so she can progress with her reading, writing and spelling. The school has noticed a significant improvement with my daughter’s literacy skills.

It is very apparent that Janet’s passion is tutoring and seeing students succeed.

My daughter’s literacy skills wouldn’t be where they are today if it wasn’t for Janet.
